Socio-Political Epistles of Subcontinent Sufis to Rulers and State Elites: A Research and Analytical Study

This research paper presents a textual, analytical, and historical review of the letters written by eminent Sufi saints and spiritual masters of the Subcontinent during the 13th and 14th centuries AH to nawabs, sultans, princes, rulers, ministers, and state dignitaries. Amidst the fragile socio-political landscape marked by British colonial dominance, the decline of Mughal rule, and intellectual-moral degradation, the Sufi saints of the subcontinent stepped beyond the seclusion of their hospices (khanqahs) to fulfill the historic duty of reforming state authority in the light of Islamic law, ethics, and politics. This study examines selected letters from Shah Ghulam Ali Dehlawi, Shah Abdul Aziz Muhaddith Dehlawi, Imam Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi, Khawaja Muhammad Abdul Rahman Chohravi, Pir Syed Mehr Ali Shah Golrawi, and Mufti Mazharullah Dehlawi. The research demonstrates that, in accordance with the principle "Al-nasu 'ala dini mulukihim" (people follow the religion of their rulers), the saints advised the nawabs and nobility toward justice, integrity, safeguarding the rights of the subjects, and adherence to the Sharia. Simultaneously, through their own conduct, they established an exemplary tradition of independence from rulers (istighna 'an al-umara) and uttering the uncompromised word of truth.
