Education plays a significant role in shaping individuals’ intellectual, moral, and social attitudes and can therefore contribute substantially to the promotion of social cohesion and religious tolerance. In contemporary societies characterized by religious, cultural, and ideological diversity, the absence of tolerance may lead to prejudice, discrimination, social fragmentation, and conflict. This study analytically examines the role of education in promoting social cohesion and religious tolerance in the light of Islamic teachings and the contemporary educational context. It explores the Qur’anic and Prophetic principles related to human dignity, justice, religious freedom, peaceful coexistence, respect for others, dialogue, and ethical conduct in situations of religious difference. The study further analyzes the role of curriculum, textbooks, teachers, pedagogical approaches, critical thinking, empathy, and interfaith dialogue in developing tolerant and cohesive societies. The research argues that education in itself does not necessarily guarantee religious tolerance; rather, its impact depends on the objectives, content, methodology, and overall educational environment through which knowledge and values are transmitted. An inclusive and dialogue-oriented educational system can reduce prejudice, develop respect for diversity, and enable learners to engage constructively with people of different religious and cultural backgrounds. Conversely, biased curricula, stereotypes, and non-dialogical teaching practices may reinforce intolerance and social divisions. The study concludes that integrating Islamic ethical principles with contemporary educational approaches can provide an effective framework for fostering religious tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and sustainable social cohesion.
