Abstract

The respected Sufis of Islam present a reflection of the social, political, and intellectual conditions of their respective eras and provide an account of the scholarly, moral, and religious activities of their times. Their sayings and teachings not only serve as valuable guidance for education and character building but also constitute an important source from historical and cultural perspectives. If the Malfuzat literature is also incorporated into the study of the Islamic history of India, the historical narrative of Islam in the Indian subcontinent can attain a more comprehensive, authentic, and reliable form.In this regard, the Malfuzat of the Chishti Sufis constitute a valuable resource for Islamic training and education in its religious, moral, and historical dimensions. In the following discussion, I will shed light on the principles and methodologies adopted by the Chishti Sufis for Islamic training and character development. The principles and methodologies adopted by the Chishti Sufis for the Islamic training of their disciples and spiritual seekers, as reflected in their Malfuzat literature, were not confined merely to the understanding of the Qur’an; rather, they extended to the practical training and spiritual development of the seekers. They emphasized that the Qur’an should be understood in both its outward and inward dimensions so that the spiritual development and purification of the individual could be achieved. In their approach to Islamic training, the Chishti Sufis regarded Shariah and Tariqah as inseparable and complementary, maintaining that Tariqah without Shariah and Shariah without Tariqah remain incomplete. This perspective serves to refute several contemporary misconceptions regarding the relationship between Shariah and Sufism. Furthermore, the Chishti Sufis regarded the Qur’an as the primary source of Sufism and subordinated every spiritual principle to Qur’anic teachings, thereby discouraging self-formulated and unauthenticated theories. One of their prominent principles was the practical interpretation of the Qur’an, whereby they did not restrict themselves to verbal teachings but demonstrated the practical application of Qur’anic guidance through their own lives. Likewise, they adopted the methodology of Muraqabah (spiritual meditation) and Mushahadah (spiritual contemplation and witnessing) as means of remembrance and reflection, considering them effective means of inner purification and attaining closeness to Allah.
