Abstract

This study explores the rhetorical dimensions of oaths in the Qur’an as presented in classical and modern works of exegesis. It aims to uncover the البلاغية (rhetorical) purposes behind Qur’anic oaths, examining how they function within the broader context of divine discourse. The research analyzes selected Qur’anic verses that contain oaths, focusing on their stylistic, semantic, and persuasive roles, and how exegetes have interpreted their meanings and implications. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, drawing on major tafsīr sources to highlight the diversity of scholarly opinions regarding the significance of oaths. It demonstrates that Qur’anic oaths are not merely stylistic embellishments, but serve profound communicative purposes, such as affirmation, emphasis, magnification of the sworn object, and directing the reader’s attention to universal truths and signs of divine power. Furthermore, the research sheds light on the relationship between the oath and its جواب (response), emphasizing the coherence and unity of Qur’anic expression. It concludes that understanding the rhetorical dimensions of oaths enhances the appreciation of Qur’anic eloquence and contributes to a deeper comprehension of its message.
