Abstract

One of the most distinguished spiritual personalities is Hazrat Baba Farid al-Din Mas‘ud Ganj-i-Shakar, whose personality reflects a remarkable synthesis of Sufism, asceticism, worship, morality, and poetry and literature. The verses and poetic themes found in his Malfuzat provide a profound reflection of his deep spiritual sensibility, eschatological consciousness, and reformative approach. For Baba Farid ْ, poetry was not merely a means of aesthetic pleasure or emotional expression; rather, it served as an effective medium for the remembrance of Allah, divine love, and the awakening of the heart. Prominent themes in his poetic expression include love for Allah Almighty, the longing for His vision and nearness, the transience of worldly life, remembrance of death, and accountability in the Hereafter.Through these themes, he sought to awaken human beings from heedlessness and direct their attention towards the reality that this world is only a temporary abode, whereas true success lies in attaining felicity in the Hereafter. Thus, in his poetry, consciousness of the Hereafter, remembrance of death, and spiritual awakening are not merely theoretical concepts; rather, they emerge as fundamental motivating forces for practical moral and spiritual reform. In the Malfuzat literature of Hazrat Sayyiduna Baba Farid al-Din Mas‘ud Ganj-i-Shakar, avoidance of associating partners with Allah, steadfastness in monotheism, encouragement towards righteous deeds, and adherence to religious obligations occupy a position of fundamental importance. His poetic teachings direct the individual beyond outward rituals towards sincerity, God-consciousness, and obedience to Allah Almighty. In particular, adherence to prayer, fulfillment of acts of worship, and performance of righteous deeds are presented as the foundations of spiritual life. Thus, in his teachings, poetry becomes a vehicle for a reformative message that seeks to refine human belief and thought, worship and conduct, as well as morality and character.By examining the poetic references, major themes, and spiritual and reformative objectives reflected in Baba Farid al-Din’s literary and poetic sensibility, this study seeks to demonstrate how his poetry and literary expression present fundamental Islamic concepts—such as divine love, longing for communion with Allah, consciousness of the Hereafter, remembrance of death, monotheism, righteous deeds, fulfillment of religious obligations, and prayer—in an effective literary and Sufi-oriented manner.
