Methodology and Distinctive Features of Tafsir Fayḍ al-Farīd: An Analytical Study

Abstract

Tafsīr Faiz al-Farīd, authored by Maulana Ghulam Muhammad Sadiq, represents a paramount contribution to Pashto Qur'anic exegesis, playing a crucial role in disseminating religious knowledge within the Pashtun region. Employing a qualitative and analytical research methodology, this paper comprehensively critically evaluates the exegetical methodology, foundational sources, and salient characteristics of Faiz al-Farīd. The study reveals that the commentator systematically integrates transmitted traditions (ma’thūr)—including Qur'an-by-Qur'an explanation, Hadith, and reports of the Companions—with rigorous linguistic, grammatical, legal, and biographical (sīrah) analysis. Furthermore, this research highlights how Maulana Sadiq bridges classical scholarship with contemporary needs by prioritizing social reform, moral instruction, theological rectitude, and the refutation of un-Islamic practices. Special attention is also paid to his structural analysis of Qur'anic coherence, chapter virtues, and critical evaluation of weak narratives. Ultimately, this article asserts that Faiz al-Farīd should not be appraised merely as a regional-language commentary, but as a robust intellectual and pedagogical bridge connecting classical Islamic scholarship with the socio-religious realities of modern Pashto-speaking society.
