Imam al-Razi’s Methodology for Resolving Difficulties in the Qur’an: An Analytical Study of His Principles and Approaches

Abstract

“Difficult passages in the Qur’an” (Mushkil al-Qur’an) refer to verses whose meanings are obscure, ambiguous, or appear to conflict with other scriptural texts or with established legal, linguistic, or rational principles. This study addresses the ongoing and evolving nature of such issues, emphasizing the need to clarify the methodologies of leading scholars so that researchers can effectively respond to intellectual and theological challenges related to Qur’anic interpretation.

The aim of this research is to understand the nature of Mushkil al-Qur’an and to highlight the methodological approach of Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi in resolving these difficulties. The study adopts an inductive and analytical method. It examines the concept of Mushkil al-Qur’an, its underlying wisdom, al-Razi’s engagement with the subject, and his strategies for addressing interpretive challenges.

The findings reveal that Imam al-Razi was a polymath who devoted significant attention to resolving problematic Qur’anic passages. While he shared common methods with other scholars, his distinctive approach lies in his extensive use of rational argumentation, interpretive analysis (ta’wil), logical and theological principles, and rhetorical insights to address and resolve apparent difficulties in the Qur’anic text.
