Abstract

This article examines the status of youth within the Islamic nation (Ummah), the contemporary challenges they face, and potential solutions in light of the Quran and Sunnah. It begins by defining youth linguistically and terminologically, noting that researchers have differed on the precise age range due to various psychological, biological, and social perspectives, though the study adopts a working definition of approximately 15–25 years of age. The paper highlights the significance of youth in Islam, citing Quranic stories of Abraham, Joseph, and the Companions of the Cave, as well as Prophetic hadiths that emphasize the value of young people who grow up in the worship of Allah and their crucial role as the backbone and driving force of the Ummah.

The article then outlines the key characteristics of the youth stage, including physical, mental, social, and emotional development, as well as traits such as energy, enthusiasm, a tendency toward change, and a desire for independence. It argues that while these God-given qualities equip young Muslims with immense potential for building and reforming society, contemporary Muslim youth are confronted with unprecedented external challenges. The most significant of these is identified as Western intellectual and cultural invasion (al-ghazw al-fikri), which aims to undermine Islamic creed, identity, values, and morals. Major tools and manifestations of this challenge include colonialism, Christianization (proselytism/tabshir), Orientalism, and globalization, alongside the spread of nationalism (al-qawmiyyah) as a substitute for Islamic brotherhood, attacks on the Arabic language, manipulation of educational systems, and pervasive media influence.

The study concludes that simply possessing positive youthful traits is insufficient without proper guidance and protection. The key difference between a youth who builds civilization and one who is led astray lies in sound upbringing and preparation. Therefore, the article proposes several recommendations: understanding the unique characteristics of youth and dealing with them wisely; intellectually and doctrinally fortifying them through correct Islamic education; investing their energies in constructive fields; and developing practical strategies to counter intellectual invasion, strengthen Islamic identity, and utilize modern media to serve youth issues. The paper ultimately affirms that the nation's true investment is its youth, and the future of Islam depends on a generation of faithful, knowledgeable, morally upright, and steadfast young people who are aware of their religion and the challenges of their time.
