An Exegetical Study of the Term “Fitna” in Selected Qur’anic Verses and Hadiths

Although the term fitna is commonly used in everyday discussions, it is often misunderstood when interpreting the Qur’an and the sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him), due to its multiple meanings and contextual usages. In some Qur’anic verses and Hadiths, the term appears in a variety of senses, including trial, test, temptation, persecution, and deviation, while in others it is associated with worldly blessings such as wealth, children, or spouses, which may become a source of trial if not dealt with within proper limits. This research article examines the meanings and usages of the term fitna through selected Qur’anic verses and Prophetic traditions, highlighting its contextual diversity and exegetical significance.
