This study examines the societal impact of sound and unsound fatwas in Muslim societies. Fatwas play a vital role in providing religious guidance based on the Qur’an and Sunnah. When issued in accordance with Shariah principles, objectives of Islamic law and contextual awareness, sound fatwas positively influence intellectual development, social reform, economic justice, and political consciousness. They help eliminate un-Islamic customs, resolve disputes, revive Islamic culture, and promote ethical economic systems such as Islamic banking. In contrast, historical evidence shows that incorrect, emotional, or context-insensitive fatwas have caused severe social, economic, and political damage, including loss of life and property, social fragmentation, and erosion of public trust in religious authority. The study concludes that iftāʾ requires scholarly competence, awareness of consequences, and collective responsibility to ensure social stability and reform.
