This study offers a comparative examination of Western civilization in the thought of Muhammad Iqbal and Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi. Drawing on Iqbal’s direct encounter with the West and his critical assessment of its materialist orientation, the paper highlights his view of Western modernity as technologically advanced yet spiritually deficient. It further analyzes Nadwi’s intellectual indebtedness to Iqbal, demonstrating how he expanded and systematized Iqbal’s critique by emphasizing the moral, cultural, and religious shortcomings of Western secular civilization. Both thinkers converge in asserting that the West, despite its scientific progress, lacks the spiritual foundations necessary for holistic human development, while Islamic civilization offers a more balanced and meaningful framework for individual and social growth.
