A Comparative and Analytical Study of “Kitab al-Zakah” in Sharh Sahih Muslim and Tuhfat al-Muslim

Abstract

The understanding of the Holy Qur’an is closely tied to the Hadith, which not only provides clarification of the Qur’anic message but also demonstrates its practical application. To facilitate comprehension, scholars across generations have written numerous commentaries on Hadith, offering Muslims a clearer insight into Islamic principles and guidance for their implementation. Among the eminent scholars of the third century Hijrah is Imam Muslim bin al-Hajjaj al-Naysaburi, who devoted extensive effort and travel to compiling authentic traditions in his renowned work, “Sahih Muslim”. This collection is regarded as one of the most authoritative sources of Hadith, holding the second rank among the “Sihah Sittah” (the six canonical works). Over time, many commentaries have been written on “Sahih Muslim”, including two significant Urdu works: “Sharh Sahih Muslim” by Allama Ghulam Rasool Saeedi and “Tuhfat al-Muslim” by Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi. The Qur’an highlights the importance of Zakat by mentioning it alongside prayer in approximately thirty-two verses, while the Hadith further emphasize its virtues, benefits, and social impact. Beyond financial support, Zakat fosters social justice, reduces poverty, promotes compassion, and ensures the circulation of wealth.This research presents a comparative study of “Kitab al-Zakat” in “Sharh Sahih Muslim” and “Tuhfat al-Muslim” analyzing their interpretations of its principles, significance, and practical application.
