The Contemporary Significance of the Qur’anic Exegetical Contents in Reformative Sermons: An Analytical Study Based on" Khutbat E Usmani" By Sheikh Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Abstract

Islamic scholars, in addition to their written works, have also elucidated the subtleties, nuances, and profound meanings of the Qur'an through their sermons and public discourses. These sermons often contain exegetical insights that are seldom found in traditional tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis) literature. Through these interpretations, scholars have not only rendered the meanings of the Qur'an accessible to the general public but have also addressed contemporary intellectual, ethical, and socio-cultural challenges. Within their discourses, critical issues such as human rights, freedom of expression, women's rights, social justice, international relations, education and research, and economic systems have been explored in light of Qur'anic guidance.

Among such scholars, Mufti Taqi Usmani stands out prominently. His sermons, compiled under the title Khutbat-e-Usmani (The Sermons of Usmani), form a ten-volume exegetical work. In this collection, he presents interpretations of those surahs of the Qur'an that are commonly recited by Muslims during daily prayers. Adhering to the foundational principles of tafsir, Mufti Usmani employs a clear and accessible language, incorporates discussions on the circumstances of revelation (shāni nuzūl) and the virtues of specific surahs, and makes effective use of poetry and analogies. Moreover, he addresses pressing contemporary issues faced by individuals and society. His exegetical approach not only reflects academic rigor but also emphasizes moral reform and the holistic development of both the individual and the community.
