A Thematic Study of the Supplications Contained in the Sunan Arba'ah

Abstract

This research presents a thematic study of the supplications (duʿāʾ) narrated in the Sunan al-Arbaʿa (Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Sunan al-Tirmidhī, Sunan al-Nasāʾī, and Sunan Ibn Mājah). The study categorizes the Prophetic supplications into major themes such as daily worship and remembrance, protection from trials and calamities, prayers for forgiveness and mercy, supplications related to health and well-being, invocations during special occasions, and duʿāʾs for personal and communal needs. By employing a thematic approach, the research highlights how these supplications encompass every dimension of human life—spiritual, moral, and social—demonstrating the Prophet’s comprehensive guidance. The findings reveal that duʿāʾ is not limited to ritual contexts but serves as a continuous spiritual bond between the servant and the Creator. This study contributes to understanding the significance of supplication in the Prophetic tradition and emphasizes its lasting relevance for contemporary Muslim societies.
