Abstract

The additions found in the texts and chains of Hadith hold great significance for Hadith scholars. The term "addition" in Hadith refers to a situation where two independent narrations exist about the same incident, but one contains extra details.

The addition in narration can occur from a weak narrator, and it can also come from a trustworthy and precise narrator.

The addition is classified into two types based on its placement: Addition in the chain of narration (Isnad), and Addition in the text (Matn).

The scholars have differed in their ruling on the addition of a trustworthy narrator. There are two main scholarly opinions on this matter:

Some scholars argue that any extra information provided by a trustworthy narrator should be accepted because it signifies precision in transmission.

Others believe that an addition should not be accepted, even from a trustworthy narrator, as the version narrated by the majority is more reliable.

The preferred opinion among scholars is a detailed approach to accepting or rejecting additions in Hadith:

If the addition aligns with what other trustworthy narrators have reported, it is accepted.

If the addition is transmitted, it is rejected.

If the addition both agrees and disagrees in certain aspects, scholars examine contextual evidence and judge each Hadith individually.
