Abstract

This research paper portrays women’s issues in Radwa Ashour's novel Faraj through an analytical and thematic study. It examines the social, political, and familial struggles faced by the protagonist, Nada Abdel Qader, as she navigates a life marked by oppression, resistance, and personal growth. The novel highlights key issues such as forced marriage, women's autonomy in work and marriage, political repression, and the role of women in student movements. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the impact of family dynamics on women's lives, including relationships with parents, stepmothers, and children, as well as the effects of divorce. The research also delves into themes of identity and feminism, emphasizing the challenges women face in balancing personal freedom with societal expectations. The novel critiques both Western and Eastern stereotypes of women and underscores economic independence as a crucial factor in women's liberation. Additionally, Faraj illustrates how women resist oppression and colonial influence by participating in political protests, enduring imprisonment, and preserving cultural identity. The study concludes that while women in the novel face systemic and societal repression, they persist in their struggle for justice, dignity, and self-determination, making Faraj a significant contribution to feminist and political literature.
