Abstract

This analytical study inspects the Qur’ānic orientation and narrative style of Sheikh Muhammad Ishaq Khan al-Madani (1938- 2018) in his Qur’ānic exegesis ‘Umdat al-Bayān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān. Published in seven volumes, this exegesis is a comprehensive Urdu interpretation of the Holy Qur’ān, with a plan for twelve volumes. The research introduces the scholar’s background and his approach to Qur’ānic interpretation, shedding light on his contributions to Qur’ānic studies. After completing his studies, he began teaching Qur’ānic commentary at Darul Ulūm Talīm al-Qur’ān in Plandri(AJK, Pakistan), and later at the Prophet(PBUH)’s Mosque in Madinah. His teaching continued during his missionary work in Dubai, where he delivered regular Qur’ānic lessons. The Tafsīr ‘Umdat al-Bayān fi Tafsīr al-Qur’ān presents the Qur’ānic text with translation, followed by detailed exegesis. Published in December 2010 by Darul Ulūm Islamia Plandri and Madani Publications, the work is designed for ease of navigation, with comprehensive lists of topics in each volume. The impetus behind this exegesis ascended from al-Madani’s realization that many existing translations and exegeses in South Asia were outdated, incomplete or misleading. He aimed to provide a translation that adhered to modern language while staying true to the original Qur’ānic message. In his preface, al-Madani explains his approach, which balances literal translation and free interpretation, making it accessible and impactful for contemporary readers. The exegesis is also characterized by its scholarly rigor, referencing authentic narrations and addressing misinterpretations and deviations found in earlier and contemporaries’ works. Sheikh al-Madani’s aim is not only to clarify the Qur’ānic message but also to correct misconceptions, ensuring that future generations have access to a true and clear understanding of the Qur’ān.
