This study explores the scientific approach to Qur'anic exegesis (al-Tafsir al-'Ilmi) within the framework of theological debates on reason (‘aql) and revelation (naql). The Qur'an and the observable universe, as manifestations of the same Divine source, inherently lack any real contradiction. Al-Tafsir al-'Ilmi leverages modern scientific discoveries to clarify and expand the understanding of Qur'anic verses, aligning divine revelation with empirical phenomena.
The first section of this study defines al-Tafsir al-'Ilmi, delving into its principles and significance. The second section examines classical theological discussions on the interplay between reason and revelation, providing a foundation for understanding the logical and theological basis of scientific exegesis and delineating its boundaries.
The third section analyzes divergent scholarly perspectives on al-Tafsir al-Ilmi, addressing the debates and controversies that have contributed to confusion among researchers. By comparing these perspectives, the study aims to provide clarity and a balanced conclusion, offering insights into the role and limitations of scientific approaches to Qur'anic interpretation. This work contributes to bridging the gap between theological tradition and modern scientific inquiry, enriching both fields in the process.
