The problem of dowry in Bangladesh: an analytical study

Abstract

This study addresses the issue of dowry in Bangladesh. Dowry is a devastating social phenomenon rooted in ancient cultural and religious traditions. It continues to exert negative influence on Bangladeshi society in a catastrophic degree. The study first traces the origins of this phenomenon in Hindu practices that have seeped into Bangladeshi culture. Then it demonstrates and analyzes how factors like deviation from Islamic teachings, social pressures, devaluation of women, poverty and greed all contribute to the perpetuation of this problem. The research employs descriptive, analytical, and inductive methodologies in gathering, analyzing, and presenting information.
