An Introduction to The Intellectual Background and Life Stages of Malik Bennabi

Abstract

Malik Bennabi's full name is Malik bin Umar bin Khudair bin Mustafa bin Nabi. He was born on January 1, 1905, in the city of Constantine, Algeria. He was born and raised in a poor yet conservative Muslim family. This was a time when Algeria was under French rule, which employed all means to keep Muslims away from education. However, his father recognized the importance of education and, despite the harsh conditions, ensured that his son received an education.

Malik Bennabi is among the thinkers who have most extensively discussed the issues of civilization and the reasons for the decline of Muslims.

He proposed solutions to the collective problems of Muslims considering psychology, sociology, and history.

In addition to highlighting civilizational issues, he also discussed contemporary Western ideologies such as materialism, Marxism, communism, democracy, and Orientalism. Moreover, he examined contemporary Islamic movements, reformist organizations, and individuals.

He authored several invaluable books, but his work is relatively unknown among Urdu-speaking circles. Given his work on Islamic civilization, he has been referred to as the Ibn Khaldun of his time.
