Abstract

The image of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is highly revered in the writings of Arab poets and others, capturing their attention and inspiring them to extol his exalted character. Similarly, West African poets have portrayed his image in their works. This paper examines how Sheikh Al-Hajj Malik Sy of Senegal (d. 1922), a prominent West African scholar and poet, depicts the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in his writings. It outlines the poet’s educational background, cultural upbringing, and some of his intellectual contributions and works. The study also explores the physical and moral attributes of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), highlighting some of the miracles granted to him by God and the themes reflecting his image in Sheikh Al-Hajj Malik Sy’s poems. The research draws on Hadiths, scholarly interpretations, biographies, and Arab poets’ poems to illustrate his unique image and concludes with findings and recommendations.
