Abstract

Jabra Ibrahim Jabra had acquainted himself well with western civilization and much of its aspects, when he went to England for higher studies. He believed that the Arab world could learn much from the west but he was also aware of how important it would be to preserve their own cultural and religious identity. This was illustrated well and often in his novels, where there would be characters that would advocate western reforms to Arabian civilization and opposing there would be characters against such changes.

In his time Arabian intellectuals had very polarizing views on the model of western civilization. Those for it thought of it as the prime example for human civilization and those against it declared it nothing more than the product of Colonial Imperialism. Jabra Ibrahim Jabra in contrast to both of these views had a very neutral perspective; that western civilization is not all good neither all bad. This study will aim at highlighting both side views as well as Jabra’s views through his novels and their characters.
