Abstract

The purpose of this study is to briefly review the most important conditions of predicate deletion and its semantic functions. Predicate is the informative part in a sentence and hence it’s essential part of every sentence, be it nominal or verbal. We begin by studying the semantic functions for predicate deletion in the Holy Quran. As a general rule, predicate is deleted when there is some indication in the context. The phenomenon of predicate deletion serves multiple semantic functions. Such semantic functions are multiple in number and can be understood only by deep analysis and thorough linguistic study. This study explores a few semantic functions of predicate deletion which will lead the learners and readers to explore more semantic functions.

Precisely, there are three major semantic functions of predicate deletion: brevity, ruling out a misleading interpretation and stimulating curiosity of the reader.
