Among the Muslim jurists who have particularly influenced the modern Islamic intellectual evolution, Imam Abu Ishaq Ibrahim bin Musa bin Muhammad al-Lakhmi al-Shatabi, the Maliki jurist of Andalus, is very prominent. His legal thought has played a fundamental role in the formation of the modern concept of Islamic law. During the time of Imam Shatbi, many important social changes were emerging. Maliki jurisprudence, which had been staticized by traditionalist jurists, was incapable of guidance in these circumstances.
Ijtihad keeps the religion of Islam fresh and enables Islamic Shari'ah to solve new problems.
