Arabic Entry Words In "Noor Ul Lughat" By Molvi Noor Ul Hassan Nayer An Analytical and Critical Study of The Letter (Jeem) As An Example
Abstract
The Urdu language occupies the central place in the linguistic map of subcontinent as a lingua franca, and it is the national language of Pakistan. The use of Arabic vocabulary in the Urdu language covers all the linguistic fields such as sciences, arts, engineering, economics, administration, law, education, etc. The issue of pronunciation for Arabic words that are used in Urdu is of much significance. A large number of Arabic words has joined the Urdu language throughout the interaction between the Arabs and the people of subcontinent. Arabic language, besides Persian, is the language of civilization for Muslims. Urdu language is influenced by Arabic language through the Quran, traditions and maxims of the prophet of Islam, and other related literature as well. It is difficult to assimilate all the Arabic words that are mentioned in Urdu dictionaries due to their large number. That is why the chapter Jeem (ج) in Noorul Lughaat is taken for study here in this dissertation. I came to the conclusion that the author of the Noorul Lughaat mentioned one hundred and forty seven words (entries) that are taken from Arabic. There are some ten words he attributed to other languages, but their origin is Arabic. So this analytical and critical study focuses on the chapter Jeem from the Noorul Lughaat with regard to the Arabic vocabulary examined therein.
