Dimensions of Criticism and Commentary on the Commentators of Hadith: An Analytical Study of "Naamat Al-Bari Fi Sharh Sahih Al-Bukhari"

Abstract

Criticism’ and ‘Commentary’ are used regularly in the studies of Islamic intellectual history, especially of the post-classical period. Many Muslim scholars assumed that only obscure ḥadīth with particular legal import required clarification. Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī is reffered to the most vital text in the islamic archives, second only to the Qur’an. In examining the commentarial legacy of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, commentators produced their works in accordance with the circumstances of their time. They not only explicated the contents (mutun) of hadith collections but also began to include systematic analyses of each hadith’s chain of transmission (isnad) and even the compilations’ organization under headings (tarajim). in this context, prominent scholar Ghulam Rasool Saeedi also made landmark contribution. He underlined several aspects of criticism and commentary. His own mechanism of critique is positive, mature, and logic based. He usally mentioned tradition with translation and explanation, and stated reasons for his criticism. He gave his own opinion as well as adopt others’ views with prescribing his methodology and principles of critique. After revolution of globalization, digital technologies, and modern media, understanding of tecniques used in this latest work is august jurisprudential scholarship. on hadith. In this article, it has been labored to discuss the criticism and commentary on prophetic tradition. it will focus on the standards of critizuqe practised by Mr. Saedi.
